Eleanor and Henry had a Dada weekend this week while Mom got a well deserved vacation. As Dad tends to do, we planned most of the weekend around meals. Lala was a life saver and took care of dinner and Henry Thursday night while Eleanor and Dad were stuck in traffic and a rain storm on the way home from downtown. On Friday, Eleanor had a regular day of school, and Henry got some one on one Dad time. We had a relaxing morning at home filled with trains, puzzles and a tracing workbook, then it was off to the store to stock up for the weekend. We got burgers and corn for Friday dinner, pancakes for Saturday morning, and supplies for make your own pizza on Saturday night. Once we picked up Eleanor, we headed to the school gym for an “Ice Cream Social”! Both kids elected for the ice cream sandwich, and Henry proceeded to eat the chocolate “bread” right off the top and leave all the ice cream. Once we finished, Eleanor got a temporary tattoo of the school mascot cougar paw, and then did a green screen funny picture with a beard and crazy sunglasses. Henry and Eleanor then took turns jumping off the bleachers seeing who could go further.
Saturday was a lazy morning – Henry slept in till almost 9. Making the pancakes was fun, but Eleanor didn’t love the way they tasted, and proclaimed them “not the best ever”. I had to agree – I think it was the whole wheat batter that we purchased. Eleanor was so upset about how they tasted that she even tried some maple syrup on them, but after tasting the first bite, and then pouring it all over the pancake, she decided she didn’t like that either. They must not have been too bad though, because the kids ended up eating three each. After lots of playtime and a long trip to Oz park to check out the new finished resurface, we started in on make your own pizza. Unfortunately, Eleanor ended up not loving her meal again – she wanted to make a very small thick pizza, which looked great going in the oven, but didn’t come out the way she wanted. She said it looked like a croissant. She had a few bits, and then I made her a quesadilla. Henry gobbled his down – and I have to admit his did look better.
On Sunday, it was off to the Children’s museum, which both kids really enjoyed. It had been a while since we had been there, and everything seemed new again. Eleanor did the whole climbing structure by herself, which was a first, and she was very proud of herself. Henry gave it a great try, but couldn’t quite make it. He did love the new boat exhibit though, especially the fishing trawler. After lunch, we hit the Ferris wheel, carousel, and lighthouse rides. Turns out this is the last week for the Ferris wheel, they are replacing it with a new one for next summer. By the time we got home, the kids were pretty tired, and were super happy to see Mama when she got back!
This week Henry got to start gymnastics with Eleanor, which he was really excited about. When we were talking about it at breakfast, he kept saying, “really…? really…?” like he couldn’t believe that he really was going to be able to do it. Eleanor had a homework assignment, which she was so excited about that she opened it up and finished it right after we got home on Friday afternoon before I even had a chance to read about the assignment. She was supposed to mark two pages in a book that were good “teaching pages” where she learned something. To complete this, she was given two sticky notes. She tore both notes into smaller pieces so she could mark more pages :)
