Dad in Charge

Dad was in charge this weekend, so naturally we started by figuring out what our meals were going to be – Dad loves to plan days around mealtime. At breakfast on Friday, Henry asked that we eat dinner at home that night, because we hadn’t eaten dinner at home in a long time. When Mom and Dad pointed out that we eat dinner home almost every night, including all that week, Eleanor chimed in with, “Maybe he means, like, a fancy dinner…like…cheeseburgers”. Ha! Nothing like getting a glimpse into what life looks like through your kids eyes!

Our Saturday started out with some relaxing at home time, and diving into a new board game, “Race to the Treasure”. It is a cooperative game, and I was very excited to try it. Unfortunately, we lost the first game to the “Ogre”, and poor Eleanor started crying because we lost, and she was the one the pull the last card that sealed the loss. Luckily, she was up for another game and this time, victory! The swing of emotions was quite incredible. After lunch, we headed over to Uncle B’s house to check out the newly finished trains. After some technical difficulties, both kids were very excited to see the train moving. They both got to honk the horn and control the speed. They were also very interested to see the location of what Uncle B calls “The Great Train Fire of 2015”. Henry told me all day that the first thing he was going to say to Uncle B was, “I’m sorry for you that your train caught on fire”, and sure enough, he said that right as he got out of the car. Speaking of cute Henry phrases, we opened up a box of Thanksgiving Legos from Grandma and Grandpa, and Henry grabbed the manual and said, “I found the constructions!”. Ha! We also did some Legos at Uncle B’s house, but they were aged 16+ and the kids lost interest when they realized the Ferris Wheel wasn’t going to be complete any time soon. Henry stuck in out long enough to see all 16 gondolas finished, but the structure was mostly just blocks on a green plate.

Eleanor has been making incredible progress at school, this week her teacher sent us a video of her playing and talking with some friends in class at full volume – and the kids seem to be really excited about getting to know her better. On Friday morning, we realized when we got to school that we had forgotten Monkey, which elicited some tears – but in the hallway two friends came up and asked if they could have playdates with Eleanor soon, and that cheered her up. Later she told me that she was worried that everyone would notice that she didn’t have Monkey and she would be embarrassed, but it turned out OK because “no one really noticed”.

Henry impressed Mama this week by getting the entire memory game set up and ready to go all by himself. They they played with the full deck – which is hard even for Mom and Dad – and he made it through the whole game!
