Eleanor and Henry had a fantastic trip up the coast to visit our CA cousins in the Bay Area. They explored Berkeley a bit, the Oakland Zoo, the local pool, and In and Out burger (their first!) and of course Pier 39 and the sea lions. Plus lots of cousin bonding time at home. I would love to tell you more about it, but alas Dad had a conflict (golfing in Wisconsin) and didn’t make the trip. From the pictures though it sure seems like they had a blast, and the kids reported that they had a good time.
Back home for a relaxing week, we focused a bit on bike riding. After a bunch of failed attempts, we took the pedals off of Henry’s bike and finally had some success with him coasting down the small hill in front of our driveway. I think a few more days of practice without the pedals and he will have it.
Next thing we knew, Lala was back to CA for a visit with us this time! We started with a trip to the USS Midway which is now a museum parked in the bay. Eleanor wasn’t very impressed, but Henry really liked it. The next day we had a slow relaxing morning and decided to finally determine for sure what type of fruit tree we have growing on the side of the house. This winter it looked a bit like large limes, but now they have gotten much larger and we were speculating grapefruit. Sure enough, Eleanor and Henry helped me pick a few and we cut them open and tried – grapefruit! Now, we have to get a few of those special grapefruit spoons :)
On Saturday we checked out the local tide pools which both kiddos really enjoyed. They were excellent tide pools, with lots of crabs, hermit crabs and urchins. I can’t wait to take Grandma there – she is a big fan of tide pools.
On Sunday we decided to head down to Pacific Beach and explore the pier and the boardwalk. The pier is unusual, there are actually cottages out on the pier that are available to rent. They looked like fun, although perhaps a bit cramped. The board walk was actually a concrete walk, but it matched in other ways with lots of pizza and ice cream options, along with t-shirt and trinket shops.
Looking forward to next week when someone has a birthday!!!
